Zao Onsen is a well known hotspring and ski resort in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture.

Within the resort there are 15 different slopes and 12 courses, with a variety for beginners to experts, The resort has an altitude of 800m and a 10km downhill course. There are 4 gondolas and 35 lifts

At the top of the mountain, you will be able to see the the famous ice monsters.

Also known as "snow monsters", the trees take on curious shapes due to the heavy snowfall and freezing winds.

The snow monsters form around the peak of the Zao Ski Resort and are usually most spectacular around mid February. Access to the monsters is provided by a ropeway and a gondola for both skiers and non-skiers. In the evenings, the monsters around the summit are lit up to be enjoyed outside or from a warm seat in the cafe. Night skiing, however, is offered only in the lower elevations of the resort.

Restaurants and cafes
When you need a place to regenerate from the slopes, there are numerous varieties of restaurants and cafes which can cater for both traditional Japanese and Western tastes.

Zao Onsen is a small resort town in the mountains, about a 40 minute bus ride from central Yamagata City. The town is compact with narrow, steep roads. Everything in town, from hotels and ryokan to ski rental shops and lifts is accessible on foot.
